Cavan, with its rounded hills and gently rolling landscape is a coarse fisherman’s paradise. Cootehill along with Belturbet, Ballyconnell, Butlersbridge, Arvagh, Killeshandra and many other centres lie surrounded by hundreds of lakes and some first class rivers.
Though bream and roach predominate, there is superb fishing for tench, rudd, perch and pike. And, there are always those fabulous hybrids found in lakes fed by the River Erne. The 140 year, or so, old Ballinamore-Ballyconnell canal is now re-opened connecting the Rivers Erne and Shannon. Known as the Shannon-Erne Waterway, it has created a vast fishery for us all, with 40 lakes along its length. |
