Riversdale, KnockvicarRiversdale is a cluster of self-catering eco friendly log houses built from Scandinavian Pine in a secluded setting adjoining Lough Key, the Boyle River and Clarendon Lough.

Riversdale is a family run business with personal attention to guests being of high importance. For 40 years the Burke Family has successfully operated a tourism business in their Georgian House at Riversdale. Their reputation for hospitality and friendliness is evidenced in particular by the high percentage of repeat and referred bookings (80%), they receive annually.

Riversdale is a unique site with lakeshore frontage and a panoramic view of Lough Key beneath the picturesque Curlew Mountains. There is private access to the lake for water sports, boating and fishing. It is also is a working farm with a variety of farm animals.Facilities on-site include: an outdoor children’s play centre; mulch path trail through private forest area; fishing boats with outboard engines and private road to Lough Key and the Boyle river. Since 2002 a research project and archaeological dig has been taking place at the “Bishops Seat” on Riversdale farm. Indications are that this site will be of national importance and is regarded to be a high status medieval site, on which stands the ruin of a medieval “Hall House” built in 1252 by the Bishop of Elphin Thomas O’Connor, cousin of the then King of Connaght Félim O’Connor.

There is excellent pike fishing on Lough Key and also on small lakes in privately owned forests. A strict ‘catch and release’ policy is observed by all angling visitors at Riversdale.

Each log house has a fully fitted kitchen with all modern appliances and an air to air heat pump system. The comfortable living area has a wood burning stove.

At the front there is a veranda with picnic table and chairs. Individual barbeques are also provided. Each house has a different layout, with the Riversdale eco friendly cabin, Knockvicarlargest houses accommodating up to seven persons. There is also a small cellar which provides storage for your tackle. All materials used in the construction are natural based products: pine log walls, clay tiles from Belgium, solitex felt, cellulose insulation (re-cycled paper), intello membrane etc, and each house has been built to high quality construction standards, incorporating innovative building technology and modern joinery techniques.

Riversdale is within walking distance of pubs - the nearest being just approx 500m away - and restaurants.

There are numerous tourist attractions which include Historical Sites and Museums:
Boyle Abbey is an impressive 12th century Cistercian Monastery; King House in Boyle illustrates 500 years of Irish life through a range of exhibitions; Arigna Mining Experience gives a unique insight into coal mining in the Arigna Valley, from the 1700s until its closure in 1990; St. Georges Church & Heritage Centre; the Attic Memorial and Carrick-on-Shannon Workhouse introductory displays give the background into why workhouses became a feature of 19th century Ireland and a symbol of the Great Famine, the famine graveyard is located on this site.

Great Houses, Parks & Gardens
Lough Key Forest Park in Boyle has forested areas, open parkland and features such as a viewing tower, bog garden and tree-top walk, a children’s Play Kingdom, Boda Borg adventure house; Strokestown House, Gardens & Famine Museum is a restored 18th century mansion with four acres of walled gardens and a famine museum. Lisadell House and gardens.

Activities
Walking – way marked walks e.g. The Arigna Miners Way and Historical Trail, The Leitrim Way.

Angling/Fishing – Boyle River and Lough Key which adjoins Riverhaven Self-catering. Other locations the River Shannon, Drumharlow Lake, Lough Allen, numerous rivers and small lakes.

Golf – Carrick-on-Shannon Golf Club which is one of the most scenic golf courses in Ireland. Other courses are located at Rosses Point, Strandhill, Casteldargan, Boyle, Strokestown and Roscommon.

Equestrian – Moorlands Equestrian Centre is located on the shores of lovely Lough Allen. Other riding centres are located in Leitrim and Sligo (30 mins drive).

Watersports – the area is very popular with canoeists. Carrick-on-Shannon Rowing Club was established in 1827. The Lough Allen Adventure Centre, which is located on the shores of Lough Allen, offers a variety of activities including canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing.

Boat Trips – Moon River Pleasure Cruiser, Carrick-on-Shannon caters for groups of up to 110 passengers. Music sessions are provided during selected cruises.

Farmers markets in Boyle each Saturday and in Carrick-on-Shannon on Thursdays are popular as visitor attractions.

Battlebridge Paintball is located within ten minutes drive.

The Lough Key Experience is an engaging audio trail through 19th Century tunnels, to the top of the Moylurg viewing tower and along the first Tree Canopy Walk in Ireland. Rising nine meters above the woodland floor and meandering through the treetops, giving a fascinating ‘birds-eye’ view of the woodland and panoramic vistas over the ancient, island-studded lake.

The innovative Boda Borg challenge is a unique concept from Sweden, containing challenges, quests and enjoyable tasks but without instructions.
