The rugged coastline.....
A rugged coastline with some of the highest cliffs in Ireland, Achill Island is a formidable place.  Offshore you will find many pinnacle reefs and rock shelves providing both shelter and feeding to many North Atlantic marine species.  The Dysaghy Rocks are well known, dangerous to the unwary but drawing in fish from the surrounding sea.  Far out to sea are The Bills, a massive rock formation that is also a fish haven, as well as a nesting site for oceanic seabirds.  The broad vista of this tremendous coastal scenery must be seen from afloat, preferably while tackling one of the many fish species that abound.

Years ago Achill gained a reputation as the place to fish porbeagle shark, indeed Dr O'Donel Browne caught what was the World Record just out from Keem Bay.  Basking sharks were regularly harpooned to be rendered down for liver oil.  There are many shore fishing marks, Horse Shoe Bay, on the Blacksod Bay side of the island noted for its wrasse fishing, Keem Bay for dabs and chicken turbot and the long strand in front of Keel Village for surf angling.

Many people still make the mistake of thinking that Achill is an unconnected island.  Not so, there has been a bridge at 'The Sound' for many years giving perfect access to this fascinating part of western Ireland.

The M.V. Lady Clare

This 32ft, fully equipped angling charter boat is based on Purteen Harbour, a small haven between Keel and Dooagh. She is fully licensed and insured for 10 anglers and is skippered by Tony Burke.
