Tuvsjyen, near Bodø, in Norway, is a 10 acre family-run activity centre based on the south side of Saltstraumen, the world's strongest maelstrom. Every six hours, 400 million cubic metres of water at speeds of up to 20 knots (40 kilometres per hour) rush through the 150-metre wide and 3-kilometre long sound connecting the Saltenfjord and the Skjerstadfjord.
The powerful whirlpools can be up to 10 metres in diameters and 5 metres deep.
Saltstraumen is recognized throughout the world as an angling paradise where the many tidal streams in the region contribute to a richness of life under water. It is famous for its abundance of fish, including cod, catfish, coalfish, wolffish and halibut. The world record for coalfish (saithe) caught with a fishing rod was set here, at an impressive 22.7kg.
Self-drive Boats The new Yamarin 18 foot boats have Yamaha 60 hp outboards, electric steering, electric start, fishfinder, life vests and GPS. Guided fishing can be arranged. For additional comfort, we recommend two persons to a boat. Deep sea fishing Join an experienced skipper on board a traditional fishing cutter. Diving Saltstraumen is recognised around the world as a paradise for divers.
Accommodation
The five types of apartments at Tuvsjyen vary in size and character and are located within 100m of the fjord. The comfortably furnished apartments sleep between two and five persons. All have a lounge, dining area, bathroom, and fitted kitchen with all you require for a self-catering holiday. Some apartments have a terrace and wireless internet.
