KLEINE DRAU Fishing Season: 16.4.-30.11.
The Kleine Drau in the Puster Valley is not affected by glacial water and therefore can be fished all year round. The average width of the river is 15 metres and the current is fast, interrupted here and there by large rocks, deep pools and eddies. This is the home of the brown trout and the rainbow trout, as well as grayling and charr on the lookout for food drifting by. Big trouts are fairly common here and 50-cm long graylings have also been caught in the Kleine Drau. But the trouts are more plentiful in fitting with the character of the water. The river is excellent for fishing between April and mid-October; in late autumn, when the water level is at its lowest and the visibility is good, fishing with small flies can be a tricky but very entertaining and challenging experience.

2 beats of 5 km lengths each at Abfaltersbach and Thal are exclusively reserved for our guests, fly-fishing only. Permitted lures are artificial dry- and wet flies, nymphs and streamer, all without barb and without additional weight.

VILLGRATENBACH Fishing Season: 16.4.-31.10.
The Villgratenbach is the most powerful of the tributaries of the Kleine Drau and is a typical mountain stream. Having meandered gently through the moor high up in the mountains the water drops down in stages to the valley. Here you can find rainbow trouts, brown trouts and charrs, the brown trout reaching considerable size in the crystal clear water. The whole valley with its rugged scenery and impressive farmhouses provides an extremely picturesque background for fishing.

Beat Innervillgraten:
15 km – from the confluence of the Villgratenbach and the Winkelbach in Ausservillgraten until the source – are at our guests’ disposal. This beat is managed together with a partner. Permitted lures are artificial dry- and wet flies, nymphs and streamer, all without barb and without additional weight.

Beat Heinfels:
This beat beginns at the acient bridge “Punbrugge” in Heinfels and finishes after about 4 km at the confluence of the Villgratenbach and Winkelbach in Ausservillgraten. It is exclusively reserved for our guests. Permitted lures are artificial dry- and wet flies, nymphs and streamer, all without barb and without additional weight.

GROSSE DRAU Fishing Season: 16.4.-31.12.
The Grosse Drau is an impressive, relatively fast-flowing river with 40-metre-wide banks full of alders and brambles. In places the flow is interrupted by rocks and breakwaters, ideal living conditions for fish of the salmon family. Grayling up to 50 cm long are not rare here even though catching them does demand a lot from the fly fisher. Danube salmon are caught all through the season, which speaks for their numbers. From the end of May until the end of August the river swells with the melting snow and ice brought down from the Tauern mountains by the Isel. In spring, however, and from September onwards, the colour of the water is a beautiful clear green. Long gravel banks emerge and in the middle of the river rocks and stones which you would never suppose during summer brace themselves against the current.

Beat Lienz:
This beat reaches 5 km from the confluent of the river Isle and Kleine Drau to the marked limit close to the golf course and is at our guests’ exclusive disposal on both sides. The excellent population of brown- and rainbow trouts as well as graylings has to be underlined even if the fish do not get as big as in the beat at Nikolsdorf.
Permitted lures are 2 flies at maximum, either dry- or wet flies, nymphs or streamer, all without barb. Additional weight is allowed.

Beat Nikolsdorf:
In the Grosse Drau at Nikolsdorf 3,5 km on one side are exclusively reserved for our guests. The beat starts at kilometer 256 of the railway track and reaches as far as the confluent of the Grosse Drau and the Laue, a cryLainachine brook, where fishing however is not allowed. Besides brown- and rainbow trouts with considerable weights you will find an big population of graylings, which can be fished from the 16th of June until the 30th of Novembre. The river is especially beautiful in the beginning (April, May) and towards the end of the season (Septembre, Octobre, Septembre).
Permitted lures are 2 flies at maximum, either dry- or wet flies, nymphs or streamer, all without barb. Additional weight is allowed.

MÖLL Fishing Season: 16.4.-30.11., except beat Obervellach: 1.5.-31.10.
The river Möll in the nearby Möll Valley is a particularly beautiful river. As it has been regulated very carefully and only in parts, it has retained most if its original appearance. The clear water bubbles over smooth boulders, trickles over pebbles, flows around large rocks or dashes against rocky banks. On its journey the Möll creates deep pools and these are excellent grounds for large trout and grayling. The main fish are brown trout and grayling and can reach a remarkable size. The energy industry uses the Möll for power generation has had both positive and negative effects on the fishing. The Möll is dammed in its upper reaches near Heiligenblut, the water being pumped to the power station at Kaprun. For that reason the Möll is virtually free of glacial water. Below the turbine affluent (section Möll Obervellach) there is a risk that the river is carrying too much water.

The 3 beats in the river Möll being at our guests’ disposal are:

Beat Großkirchheim:
The beat beginns at the confluent of the Möll and the Zirknitzbach and ends after about 5,1 km at the bridge “Jungfernsprung” close to the kiosk.
The river at Großkirchheim runs in a 20 to 25 meters wide river bed which, in the upper part, has not been regulated and houses beautiful brown trouts. The lower part has been regulated, but still offers excellent fishing on big graylings. The advantage of this part of the Möll is that there are no water swells. The beat can easily be reached by car, is easily accessible by foot and can be waded. In spring and autumn, when the water is low, you can even pass the river. It is ideal for fishing with the dry fly for beautiful graylings and brown trouts.
This beat is exclusively reserved for our guests. You can fish this part of the river with artificial dry- and wet flies, nymphs and streamer, all without barb. Additional weight is not allowed.

Beat Lainach:
The Möll at Lainach runs in a natural, broad river bed and is not affected by any water swells either. The beat can easily be reach by car on all of its 3,5 km, is easily accessible by foot and can be waded during spring and autumn when the water level is low. Ideal for fishing with dry flies for graylings and brown trouts, it is also exclusively reserved for our guests. Lures permitted are dry- and wet flies, nymphs and streamer, all without barbs and without any additional weight.

Beat Obervellach:
This beat with its 18 km is situated between Gößnitz and Napplach. Here the Möll is up to 30 m broad, can be waded but can hardly be crossed. 11 bridges throughout the beat make it easy to access the river by car, for those who do not want to climb over rough and smooth. The beat is not managed by ourself, but we can hand out up to 4 permits per day. Also in this part of the river only fly fishing is allowed.

At the lower end of the grounds is the Teuchlbach, a tributary mountain stream which has cut a picturesque gorge through the mountains. Its crystal-clear water forms several deep-blue pools in which you can observe beautifully coloured brown trout. There is a narrow road with two tunnels through the valley, so you can drive right up to the mountain pastures.

The power stations at Gössnitz and Vellach, however, do cause a swell in the river, causing it to rise considerably along 90% of its course. These swell times are not regular, but you must be prepared for difficult conditions between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily. Perhaps an ideal opportunity to devote some time to the family, visit one of the excellent local inns, drive into the Teuchl valley or simply lie down on the grass and day-dream. The ambitious angler will accept the challenge and make his catch even at high water.

Permitted methods are artificial dry- and wet flies, nymphs and streamer, all without barb. In this beat additional weight is allowed, although not at the very end of the line. Please also pay attention to the diverging special instructions printed on the fishing licence.

Hotel guests may keep one fish per day for having it prepared for dinner in the hotel. Female graylings are protected all year round.
