Very little in the way of sea angling reports this week. The colour in the Boyne Estuary has made fishing difficult and no reports of catches have been received. Reports of tope being caught in North Louth, Dundalk Bay and at Dunany Point have been received but unfortunately no details of individual catches have been received.
Jim Hendrick reports a short session between weather systems produced some nice fish on wednesday 14 July. Jim can be contacted at www.probassfisher.com

Cork Harbour angling reports
One of the biggest bass from Cork Harbour in years was recently caught by well known Cork angler, Tony Tait. Tony is well known in the small boats circle, but tries his hand at shore fishing aswell and it was from a harbour shore spot that he caught this beauty. Tony had planned a offshore session on his Warrior 175 but was put off by the strong SW winds that kicked up at the start of last weekend. Instead, Tony opted to fish one of his back-up shore marks in the harbour. Using crab for bait and a simple one hook rig Tony didn't have to wait long before he was into this monster. Tony did expect to hook up a bass but not one of this size!!! Wow, its huge. Well done, Tony. The fish registered 6.36kg on Tony's certified scales, thats over 14lbs in old money. The fish had a length of 83.5cm and a girth of 49.5cm; what a fish!
When Tony did eventually get offshore his run of luck continued. Tony managed a fine specimen megrim, pictured over. Some buggers have all the luck!!!
Tony is a regular competitor in the Cork Small Boats Festival and should be in the final shakeup again this year. For more information on the Small Boats Festival have a look here http://www.skuaangling.net/.
This fantastic story was forwarded by another well known Cork angler, Kevin Murphy of Bellavista Boats. Thanks Kevin. Kevin has a fine fleet of Warrior 175's for hire. If you would like more information on these self-drive boats have a look here http://www.bassfishingireland.com/.
Deep sea Festival
There are €2000 in cash prizes to be won in this year's Cobh International Deep Sea Angling Festival. That's on top of the usual array of crystal prizes. In fact the total prize fund now stands at over €7,500. If you haven't booked in for this event, you should seriously think about giving it a shot, especially as the fishing out of Cork Harbour this year has been so good. The Festival starts on Monday 6th September and runs over 4 days concluding on Friday 10th September.
The fishing over the years at this event has been excellent. It is a unique competition in that points are scored mainly by weight. This is a throw back to the format of old competitions prior to the introduction of conservation in the '70's. In fact Cobh SAC were one of the first clubs to pioneer competitions run under a conservation format. Nevertheless, this competition is the nearest you'll get to the old competitions of yesteryear. The fish are still returned, mind!!! However, they are weighed onboard and recorded to the nearest 0.5kg. Points are awarded by kg and per fish. As a result many of the competitors concentrate on fishing for conger and quite hefty scores can be notched up as the average conger in these parts weigh between 10 and 20 kgs. The heaviest fish last year was a 15kg conger, but there were many of similar size. In prior years they have been even heavier.
It's not all conger, though, and quality cod, ling, and pollack abound. Indeed, tactics come into play and many a previous winner has concentrated on gilling for pollack for the week.
What marks this competition out, though, is the banter and fun to be had during the week. Needless to say it doesn't just end in the boats, but carries on in the various watering holes that all competitors retire to from the pier. Its that mix of quality fishing and craic that has made this such a successful event over the years. Indeed, the competition is in its 44th year now and many of the international anglers from England, Scotland, Wales, Germany, Belgium, and Holland have been returning year in, year out.
The beauty about Cork Harbour, aswell, is that in the event of inclement weather there are still productive venues that can be fished. Its definitely one to mark in your calendar. If you are interested in fishing this Festival you can contact Cobh SAC Club secretary, Mary Geary, on 021 - 4812167 for more information, or download the entry forms at http://www.flickr.com/photos/cobhsac/. Don't delay, book today!!!
500 pollack to 8lbs in a week from Beara shore
While the weather has become a more unsettled over the past week the shore fishing on the Beara is still good.
On their fourth visist to the Beara Mark, Steve. Peter, Tom and Adam caught Ray to 8lbs, conger to 19lbs, pollack to 4lbs and one memorable day on a previously unfished mark saw Steve and Mark catch 20 huss to 12.5lbs and on plenty of occasions their 80lb line was bitten through indicating a large presence of good congers. The newly named ‘Norfolk Rocks’ will be receiving more attention over the coming weeks.
Danny Parkins and his fishing partner brought their spinning rods to the Beara and during their week long stay had over 500 Pollack to 8lbs 7ozs as well as the Pollack they caught Mackerel, Coalfish, Bass, John Dory, Ballan and Cuckoo Wrasse.
Reports have also reached me of a 17lb 2oz Thornback Ray taken from the shore. Hopefully more on this and a picture next week.
Anyone looking for information on fishing on the Beara can contact me.

Great Tope fishing in Shannon Estuary
Since my last report the weather has been not as obliging as it had been over the last weeks. However this has been more than compensated by some of the best Tope fishing I have seen with one 3 hour session resulting in 24 Tope in the boat! One of the strange features of this excellent fishing is that a large proportion has been females. I say this because in my experience in other years most of the Tope we caught were male, with female fish being a real exception. Most of the fish over the last week have been in the 25 to 35lb bracket but all have been very lively and giving a good fight.
As I said we have been a bit restricted in getting fishing out in the open sea but when we do there have been Mackerel in very plentiful supply and with some fine big Pollock feeding underneath to keep all on their toes! In general there seem to be a lot more fish closer in to the Loop and it takes a bit of an effort to keep off the Pollack.
Over the next week the forecast is giving some improvement in the weather and I am hoping to do my first shark drifts. With the water now up to 16’C I would expect that the Blues will be about.

Blue sharks from Clifden Sea angling is really picking up over the last couple of weeks, with more and more species now being caught, and boat anglers in particular having excellent sport. Monday the 12th was a good day for Peter Brittain aged 14, son of Clifden skipper John Brittain. While drifting off Slyne Head Peter caught, tagged and released a Blue Shark, the fish was his first ever and also Clifdens first for 2010 so there were smiles all round. During the day Peter also had a specimen red gurnard of .930 kgs and a fine Ling weighing around 7kgs plus 6 other species bringing his count for the day to 9. No pressure Dad!!

Galway bay
Max Couque from Galway Bay Fishing reports on excellent fishing in Galway Bay for himself and Kevin MacGabhann, who both skipper charter boats out of Spiddal. The two boats have around 70 spurdog caught, tagged and released, which is well up on previous years. Galway Bay is the place to come for spurdog, one of the rarer species for anglers around the country. The weather was very good until the end of June and we did a lot of bait fishing catching spurdog, bull huss, pouting, cod, conger eel, ballan wrasse, cuckoo wrasse and tope. 7 tope have been tagged and released so far, including 3 good fish between 30 and 40lbs. Thornback ray are also starting to appear in catches now, and should increase in numbers over the rest of the summer. Mackerel are plentiful and easily come by, so bait is not a problem. Pollack fishing is also very good at the moment, with shads and soft baits proving very effective. We will be targeting the blue sharks very soon as well.
For those who use the internet a lot, Max also mentioned that he has uploaded several videos to youtube, which can be viewed at www.youtube.com/user/galwayfishing and the guys are also on Facebook at

Tope, rays and wrecks for Rosguill
Wreck fishing had been good lately, but the weather prevented us reaching many of the better offshore marks in recent days. Last week we had some lovely ling and pollack. Then as the weather deteriorated fishing was confined to inshore venues.
On Wednesday porbeagle sharks were a possibility following 6 or 7 being landed by local boats the day before. But the conditions were very rough and the big sharks never showed. Fishing was interupted by a Coast Guard request to investigate reports of an upturned vessel. Fortunately it was found to be a silage bale drifting about and we were given permission to return to our fishing.
Though the day was fairly rough no one left disappointed as tope were taken at anchor and on the drift. We also had 3 species of ray in the boat, one after the other, including cuckoo ray which is not very common in these parts.
Dabs on the sand
John Rafferty went sand fishing a couple of times with a friend last week. On the first trip they had a total of 85 fish, plenty of Dabs and Plaice amongst the catch.
On the second day they caught 85 fish in total, 12 different species and everything was caught on lugworm that were stored in the fridge for a week!
