LAUKLINES / ARTIC FISHING End of Season Report - 2011

We started the fishing for skrei in the beginning of March. The trend of more and bigger fish for each year that passes seems to continue. However, the season started with a lot of small fish around 10kg, but allready during the first trip we caught cod over 30kg.

The average size was getting bigger and bigger during the season. In the end of March we had some fantastic trips with huge amounts of fish between 10-20kg, approx. 200-300/trip and in average ten fish over 20kg/trip. We also caught some halibut, wolffish, haddock, coalfish and Redfish during the trips. A memorable moment from the season was when Dave Lewis and Sky TV visited us in mid-March. The trips with them resulted in huge amounts of big cod up to 33,3kg. Click here to read an article about the trips. All indications are that next season will offer an even better skrei fishing, with huge amounts of big cod. If you want to experience this adventure fishing, it is high time to book the trip for 2012. As a bonus there are big possibilities to experience the northern lights this time of the year.

The fishing for wolffish started in the end of April, but we had the best trips in mid-May. During one of the trips we caught two fish over 10kg and many around 6-8kg. In July when we thought that the fishing for wolffish was over for this year, Alesandro Leban caught a fantastic 16,5kg wolffish just 2 minutes from the camp. This is one of the biggest ever caught on rod. The coalfish arrived early this year. During May and June huge amounts of nice coalfish between 5-10kg were caught. The most of the big ones were caught on softbait shads and makks, pelagic at about 50m depth where it was 100-300m deep. The biggest coalfish this season was around 13kg. We tried some trips during the summer on really deep water.
There are many exciting and unexplored areas on the deep waters. The trips resulted, among others in big redfish up to 4,3kg. During a trip we fished as deep as 900m. It resulted in eleven greenland halibuts. The biggest one weighed incredible 10,8kg. Its by far the biggest greenland halibut ever caught. The previous record was 5,8kg.

The fishing for halibut has this year been slightly worse than normal. But its possible that the best time is left, late fall is often a good time for big halibut. So far, July has been the best month for halibut this year. In the start of the month Peter Bosman and his friends managed to catch more than 20 halibuts during a week. The 9th of July Kim-Eirik Johansen caught a halibut of 134,5kg. Just a couple of days later, 12th of July, Öyvind Höier caught an even bigger halibut of 162,5kg. 23rd of July we caught three nice halibuts during a couple of hours, the two biggest was 40kg and 62kg. As always, softbait shads and small coalfish has been the best baits.

This autumn we have experienced a fantastic fishing for plaice. Each trip has resulted in 10-40 plaice with an impressive average weight of nearly 2kg. The biggest so far this fall is 3,26kg. Big shoals of herring attracted much whales to the fjords this summer. Humpback whales, Minke whales, dolphins and porpoises have been seen almost daily in the area. The fishing for coastal cod was best in May. In the start of the month much big cod up to 23kg was caught in the fjord. The most of them were caught in the pelagic water at 50-70 meters depth where bottom depth was 100-150m. During May huge shoals of cod around 3-10kg was feeding on sandeels on the shallow sandy areas outside the fjord. It was cod all the way from the surface to the bottom. We could see the cod just under the surface and just place the shad in front of the one we liked to catch.

During the summer we had unusually good fishing for haddock and the biggest we caught were about 4kg. The fishing for mackerel is getting better and better every year. This year the mackerel arrived unusually early, in the beginning of June. The biggest caught so far this year were about 1,5 kg. Autumn is also the best season for whiting and the last few weeks we have caught many nice whitings up to 1,5 kg. In the end of September we held Lauklines Multi-Species Tournament. The Competitors managed to catch cod, coalfish, haddock, tusk, halibut, dab, plaice, shorthorn sculpin, redfish, norway redfish, whiting, mackerel and thorny skate. The winning team was ”Team Sweden”.

The 1st of October we start running the northern lights trips.
