Longford and Strokestown

Dave, Alan, Neal and Ray from Blackpool have now been coming to Ireland for over twenty years now and know just how bad the weather can be, they were staying with Kevin and Jane of Melview Lodge for there 6th year so know the waters pretty well. Kevin said the lads prebaited and fished in weather conditions that only experienced anglers would, by this time there umbrellas were broken by the high winds but this did not put them off as they still managed some good catches of Bream, Hybrids and Roach fishing mainly the feeder.

Fishing in and around Longford and Strokestown has been good despite some very bad weather conditions, feeder fishing seemed to produce the best fish with Bream to 4lb 10oz along with some good Hybrids and Roach. At the time of writing rain some heavy was still falling, I'm sure once the Loughs, Lakes and Rivers return to there normal levels we should see some good catches.

Huge tench - potential record

Finbarr Quigley sent us the following news by email.

The captor is Keith Berry from Northern Ireland, a member of the Tenchfishers who is also the current holder of the British Roach record and the fish was caught in the middle of the day at 2pm last weekend.

Even though the fish is 6.5oz over the current record, Keith will not be claiming the record because his scales were not certified in advance of the capture. He has given me permission to provide you with the photograph, but details of the venue will have to remain a closely-guarded secret. Unfortunately for the rest of us!!

New coarse angling regulations for 2010

A 2010 regulation - that will be welcomed by most - is that which prohibits the killing of coarse fish (including eels).

As a summary (with effect from 1st January) -

Coarse fish. It is prohibited to kill coarse fish (however, see regulation on pike, below) in the Foyle and Carlingford areas waters.

Eels. It is prohibited to kill eels in the Foyle and Carlingford areas.

All such coarse fish and eels caught, must be carefully handled and returned alive and unharmed to the water.

Pike. There is a bag limit of 2 pike weighing 4 kg or less, on any one day. Pike of 4kg or more must be returned unharmed to the water. There is an exception for specimen pike with a bag limit of 1 specimen pike in any one day (a specimen pike in a river is 9 kg or more; a specimen pike in a lake is 13.6 kg or more).

Live bait. Live fish cannot be used as bait in fresh waters in the Foyle and Carlingford areas.
